Kewa care guide
Quick answer
Kewa's mood tracks the biome you build on its back. Healthy, diverse, well-watered, low-pollution cities grow fruit trees and speed up galaxy travel; unhealthy ones spawn Thorny Stems.
Kewa is not background scenery — the whale is a living system, and your city is living on it. The biome you build is the biome Kewa feels, and Kewa's mood lands right back on your peeps. Get this relationship right and the whole game gets easier; ignore it and the whale will make you notice.

How health and happiness flow
Two tracks run together:
- Health tracks the state of the biome on Kewa's back — trees, rivers, pollution, the way your city sits on the land.
- Happiness tracks how Kewa feels about all of it — and per the developers, health "can directly affect how your story progresses and concludes." This is not a side meter.
The visible signals
Kewa tells you what it thinks, if you know where to look:
| Signal | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Travel speed | A healthy Kewa swims the galaxy faster — routes take less time |
| Kewa fruit trees spawn on the whale's back | Kewa is incredibly happy — the fruit gives peep happiness bonuses |
| Thorny Stems grow | Kewa is unhealthy — they drag peep happiness down |
| Emergency travel | An overheated Kewa picks up and moves to somewhere cold to cool down |
What actually changes Kewa's state
- Your biome design. Planting trees, creating rivers around your settlements and minimising pollution keeps the whale's biome healthy — and healthy bodies feel happy.
- Temperature. Stay parked too long in a hot region and Kewa gets unhappy; push happiness down far enough and Kewa initiates emergency travel to a cooler spot. Temperature also changes how fast crops grow, so route planning is strategic, not cosmetic.
- Your dialogue choices. Conversations with Kewa are a real mechanic: kind words nudge happiness up, hurtful ones nudge it down. The whale is listening.
- Kewa's own stamina. Kewa needs to eat. When stamina runs low, Kewa detours through debris fields to feed — which is where things get messy for you: debris can rain down on buildings, breaking them, and broken buildings need repair before production resumes.
Habits that keep the whale well
- Plant, don't pave. Keep a decent share of Kewa's back green; trees are the cheapest insurance you have.
- Mind your pollution. Generators and industry are the main offenders — the Burner Generator's -25% pollution adjacency trick (4 empty tiles) is a good early habit.
- Route with temperature in mind. Before committing to a long stay, check the region — hot and cold both bite, for crops and for mood.
- Repair fast after debris runs. A broken chain is a stalled economy; find the downed buildings and fix them.
- Be kind in the dialogue. It costs nothing and it literally pays.
